Deep Sky Vineyard is a 20-acre boutique vineyard located just south of Willcox, Arizona. The vineyard was founded with the goal of proving that great grapes could be grown in Arizona. The owners were inspired by their trip to Argentina, where they fell in love with Malbec wines. They planted Malbec and most of the Rhone varietals on the vineyard, including Grenache, Mouvedre, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Counoise. They also have a Rhone white, a Viognier. The Elgin vineyard was planted in 2017 and has Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère.
The vineyard has a cool, cloudy climate and limestone soil, similar to Bordeaux. Growing grapes in this area is challenging because of the possibility of hail and sunburn on the grapes, bug and bunch rot pressure from rain, and hungry birds. However, the fruit from Elgin is worth the struggle because the berries are naturally small, bursting with varietal flavors, and have a naturally high acid content. The vineyard’s relentless attention to detail and perseverance drives them every day to meet their goal.
Deep Sky Vineyard offers an on-vineyard experience for their guests, where they can taste the grapes that are used in their wines. They also offer indoor and outdoor seating options for wine tasting. Deep Sky Vineyard’s unique location, growing season, and growing techniques make their wine stand out from the rest.
